Human Hair Braiding Styles for Different Face Shapes

Human Hair Braiding Styles for Different Face Shapes

Posted by HairFactory Team on Mar 29th 2023

Who knew weaving three strands of hair could create such a timeless and iconic look?! Braids have been around for centuries and they are still in vogue today. Braids are versatile and can be worn as a casual look or in elegant updos that look good or at home at an event of any stature.

Human hair braids can look good on different hairstyles - whether it’s a short hair style or a long one - no matter what texture you have, braids add a dimension that is hard to ignore and tough to dislike. They save you the trouble of working the braids into your natural hair and let you simply pick and choose a style that suits your face type and add it to your look.

In the past few years celebs and influencers alike have taken the braided look to the red carpet and beyond - creating a kind of renaissance for human hair braids.

In our opinion, human hair braids look good on almost anyone; but there are some guidelines that you can follow to make sure that the braided hairstyle that you choose for yourself really looks good on you.

This has to do with knowing the shape of your head and finding out which braided hair style will complement it the most.

Of course anyone can try anything but we know that if you follow this simple guide you’ll be more than happy with the result that you get.

Let us look at these different face types and what braids can do for you.

  • Oval Face
  • Square Face
  • Round Face
  • Long Face
  • Diamond Face
  • Heart Shaped Face

The Oval Face

People with an oval face shape have balanced facial features, so they can pull off a wide variety of braiding styles. If this sounds like you then we have some suggestions that might just take you from a run of the mill hair do to a braid-tastic one. Cornrows, box braids, and twists. These are just some of the braided hairstyles that will give you that fabulous care-free and boho chic hairstyle that you’ve always dreamed of. The box braid - created with the help of box shaped sections, can last for several weeks with proper care. It can also be styled in a variety of ways so you will be spoilt for choice. Cornrows have been around forever and they don’t need an introduction. You can go with some simple cornrows for an ultra hip and modern look.

The Square Face

A square face shape has strong, defined angles. It looks sculpted out of rock like a Roman statue. (You’ll know if you’ve got one). To soften these features, try braids that are loose and flowing, such as a waterfall braid or a side braid that drapes over the shoulder.

The waterfall braid mimics the flowing appearance of a waterfall and softens the jagged angular features of the square face shape. Can there be a more dynamic hairdo than that? We don’t think so. The waterfall braid will last you for weeks on end with the proper care so you don’t have to worry about doing it and redoing it again and again.

Or try the side braid. It pulls your hair back and gives you that strong no-nonsense look without compromising on glamor!

The Round Face

For those with a round face shape, braids that add height and volume to the top of the head can help elongate the face. Consider a crown braid, French braid, or fishtail braid that is pulled up and away from the face. Crown braids are the ones that are braided in circles and sit on the head like a queen’s crown. They look great with a little bit of decoration. French braids go from the top of the head down to the nape of the neck and are a great choice for you if you’re always on the go and want a way to keep your hair neatly out of the way. The fishtail braid is the one which has a single long braid at the back.

The Long Face

A long face shape can benefit from braids that add width and volume to the sides of the face. If that sounds like you then we have just the styles for you. Consider a halo braid, a Dutch braid that starts at the temples and wraps around the head, or a side braid that is pulled over the shoulder. These styles will accentuate your features and have you looking like a page out of a magazine.

The halo braid wraps around the head like a halo. We know - what could be more angelic? It’s created by braiding two French braids or Dutch braids on either side of the head and then joining them together at the back of the head. If that sounds complicated - don’t worry - it isn’t.

The braids are then pinned or tucked in place to create a seamless circle of braids that wraps around the head. You could do this yourself or get the help of your stylist. The result is a crown-like effect that frames the face and creates an elegant, polished look. The halo braid can be worn as a casual, everyday style or dressed up for formal occasions. It is also a popular choice for weddings and other special events.

The Diamond Face

What are the features of a diamond face shape. Once again this face type has a strong bone structure–much like the square face. It has a less pronounced forehead and wide protruding cheeks. Being widest at the cheeks the face gives the appearance of a diamond, more so because of the pointed chin.

We suggest the waterfall braid for this style.

Two well-known celebs with a diamond face are Megan Fox and Jeniffer Lopez.

The waterfall style will take shift the attention from your cheekbones and make your chin seem less pointed. The falling braids will give a softer llok and reduce the angular shape to a more rounded one.

The Heart Face

If you’ve got a heart shaped face - with a wider forehead and a narrower chin - then we have some great suggestions as far as human hair braids go for you. To balance out these features, consider braids that add volume to the lower half of the face. A side-swept braid or a bohemian braid with loose waves can do just the trick.

Bohemian braids, aka boho braids, give your braids a loose, free-spirited look. They’re inspired by the Bohemian fashion style that’s known for its free spirited nature. Style in a half-up, half-down style or a full updo, and use wispy strands of hair to create a relaxed, effortless look. Going to a music festival or an outdoor concert? The Boho braid might be just the thing for you!

Ultimately, the best human hair braiding style for your face shape will depend on your personal style, hair texture, and preferences. Consult with a professional stylist to determine which braiding style will work best for you or get down to some good old at home DIY and you’ll be on your way to being a style sensation.
